Penacook Library Memory Project

About The Project

As we said goodbye to our Merrimack Street location, we put out a call to the community to keep the memory of the historic library building alive.

Community members shared their memories and pictures to the “I Remember at Penacook” project.

Below are the submissions we received. We hope you enjoy reminiscing as much as we have while you view the project!

If you have more thoughts, memories, or photographs, to share with us from the historic building please contact us!

I Remember at Penacook...

Oh the library, my home away from home. My refuge where many other worlds lived between the front and back covers. I could spend hours making the perfect choice. Walk back home. Get a cold drink. Plop down on my porch and begin a new adventure. That library was special. Just my size. Just for me.

CPL Penacook Branch Interior, undated DI have many beautiful memories of our Penacook Library. I first went there when we moved to Sorrel Drive in Concord and the librarian was Mary Joan. I remember story times and tea upstairs with our daughters. My kids came with me, then my nannikins (I’m now a professional nanny) and now my granddaughter who is 6. The latest wonderful librarians that I have come to know there are Julia and Karen- often finding and recommending good reads for me. I will miss this historical building but will enjoy my many memories.

I spent many hours in that library as a kid in the 50's. Also, used to get my bicycle license plate from the PD which was located in the rear of the building...

...many of us did a great deal of homework and test studying at the large table (just behind the librarian, she oversaw the studying aspect.)

I spent so many hours in that libary! I think I read just about every single book in the children's section!

CPL Penacook Branch Interior, undated BMy older sister took my older brother there as a kid, that library is where my brother found his love for reading. I also found my love for reading in that very same place...Nothing like opening a book and getting that special smell of paper.

My first job was as a Page at the Penacook Library, 1969-1971. I would walk from MVHS to the Library. It was only 2 or 3 afternoons a week, but it was so much fun.

I remember story hour and can almost recall the scent of all the books.

When older (7th-8th grade) I remember sitting in the Reference section looking up information in Encyclopedias and other reference books. And learning the Dewey Decimal system and how to use the card catalog. No Google back then.

PirateParty81206 Wendy2Will miss the character of this library branch.

I have so many wonderful memories from that space, especially the tea parties!!

I loved the library, I'd go there to pick out a couple of books, take them home to read them, and then go back for more...
