Public Works Week

The American Public Works Association annually hosts National Public Works Week to promote the importance of public works services. This year, National Public Works Week is May 21-27, 2017 and the theme, "Public Works Connects Us," celebrates the vital role public works plays in connecting us all together with streets, roads, bridges, and water systems. The City of Concord’s public works services are performed by Concord General Services. These services include street maintenance, trash and recycling services, water treatment and distribution, wastewater treatment, snow plowing, public properties maintenance, and equipment services. These services provide resources we have grown accustomed to having every day – such as having water every time we turn on the faucet, or having our trash properly disposed of, or even safely maintained streets to travel on. Mayor Bouley has signed a proclamation to declare May 21-27, 2017 as this year’s Public Works Week for Concord, New Hampshire in recognition of the contributions of public works employees.

Concord General Services Divisions

Equipment Services
Routine maintenance and inspections are performed on City vehicles and equipment to keep the City's fleet safe and in serviceable condition.

Public Properties
City owned and public community facilities are maintained on a regular basis to keep areas clean, safe, and in operable condition. Some of the public properties maintained include the Municipal Complex, community centers, community swimming pools, parking garages, and the Douglas N. Everett Arena (municipal arena also managed within this division).

Highway & Utilities
Street maintenance and repair are significant responsibilities of our Highways and Utilities Division. Potholes, paving, existing signs, sidewalks, water distribution, sewer collection, snow plowing operations, dead animal removal, fall leaf collection, and the Sustainable Tree Program are all responsibilities of the Highways and Utilities Division. Street lights are maintained by Unitil and traffic lights are maintained by Concord Fire Department.

Trash & Recycling
The City of Concord contracts trash and recycling services with Casella. The City uses a pay-as-you-throw program for curbside trash collection to encourage the practice of reducing waste and increasing recycling. Recycling is single-stream and does not need to be sorted for curbside collection.

Water Treatment & Distribution
Concord water is sourced from Penacook Lake, treated at our Water Treatment Plant, and distributed throughout the city to provide drinking water that exceeds EPA standards. Residents connected to the City's water distribution system pay for these services through their utility bill.

Wastewater Treatment & Sewer Collection
The City's sewer collection system collects and delivers all wastewater to our wastewater treatment facilities. Wastewater is processed to protect the community's health and environment. Water and biosolids are recovered through this process to provide sustainable practices. Residents connected to the City's sewer system pay for these services through their utility bill.
